UPDATE! Unfortunately the wind forecast is too poor this weekend for us to go on with the competition.
Everyone involved is really keen to get this going though, so we have decided the competition is not cancelled but just postponed, and we will try to link it in with the demo day in late summer. We'll be in touch closer to the date to keep you in the loop!
Thank you and see you soon!

Kite competition at Royal Sands
When:
TBC later in year, likely to tie in with DEMO day. If you want us to drop you a line when we have a date, fill in the competition entry form at the bottom of this page and we'll be in touch later this year to see if you want to join us on the day.
Minimum wind speed for the event to run is around 8 knots, and with onshore or cross wind direction.
Where:
Royal Sands beach. Park on the beach as usual. We have council 'tenancy' to run the event there, but we do NOT have right of way over other beach users so please be considerate like always. We have asked the council to notify anglers that it might be best for them to go fish elsewhere for the day to avoid hooking a kiter, because kiters put up quite a fight when you try to reel them in and most anglers are too old for that.
What:
- Several heats of racing or other suitable competition
- Several disciplines possible, race/freestyle/WOOjump depending on wind conditions and riders and depending on WOOs available (bring one if you have it!)
- Kit supplied by CR:X, so all kiters tested on ability not on their kites. Kites and twintips that can be converted to foilboards.
- Prizes supplied by CR:X, WEST Kiteboarding, Thatchers and possibly more
- 'Social hub' of tent/beats, tea/coffee with thanks to WEST kiteboarding
- BBQ organised by West Kiteboarding. Everyone (friends and family of kiters) welcome!! If you're not a member and also have not competed on the day we ask for a small contribution of £2 per head and eat what you like.
Who:
Any kiter who can safely launch/land and kite amongst others, but MUST have proof of 3rd party liability insurance (is otherwise not allowed by council to kite at Weston and would invalidate our insurance for the event). Proof of BKSA membership is proof of insurance.
Cost:
Most is covered by sponsorship. The club can contribute some, but not all of the remaining cost, that's unfair to members who do not compete and was voted against by club members when asked. So:
- Club members pay £10 if they want to enter in several heats for the day (we'll split available slots over all kiters who want to compete)
- Non-members pay £45 for several heats during the day
- Contact us if you are a BKSA member but not a club member.
We'd like to point out that it works out cheaper for a competing kiter to join the BKSA/club. If you're already a BKSA member then joining the club is very easy and free (email the BKSA [email protected] and ask them to be joined to us) and if you're not a BKSA member then join via their website, and when asked if you'd like to join a club select 'North Somerset - Wind, Wheels and Waves'.

WHY the price difference??
The MAIN reason the club exists is to keep the Somerset (especially WSM) beaches open for all kiters to have fun. A strict requirement of the council, who allows us to use the beach together with other beach users, is that kiters abide by the rules and that every single kiter has 3rd party liability insurance up to a large amount.
- The club facilitates communication of the rules to kiters, and communication from kiters to the council. To do that, we need to have contact details of all kiters that use the beach, so that the council is reassured we can reach them in case any safety issues etc come up. We receive email addresses for anyone joining the club, and only email you twice a year if no urgent issues arise, but will keep you informed on an event if you ask us to. So no spam. The council trusting us to have the contact details is why we encourage everybody who kites at the Somerset beaches to become a member of the club. For how to, click below.
- The council expects the kiters to guarantee that every single one of us carries the appropriate insurance, and they may check kiters for this. Any BKSA member automatically has the right insurance. The BKSA is not the only provider (broker via their membership) but is the biggest in this area and best known, so well accepted by the council. This is why we encourage all kiters to be insured. Because we encourage club membership as well (explained above) we encourage BKSA membership/insurance because only BKSA members can become club members (at no extra cost).

I'm a member of the BKSA and of the club
Great! Your BKSA membership card will have the club name on it, and we have your name on our membership list so no problem if you forget your card on the day. If you sign up or renew after the 25th of March 2018 we may not have your name on our list though, so bring proof of membership (ie BKSA confirmation email or similar) on the day. Sign up below so we know numbers, and we'll see you there!
I'm a BKSA member but not sure if i'm a club member or am not
Check your BKSA membership card, it will have the name of the club you chose to join (if any, their website makes it easy to overlook this when renewing BKSA membership so it is possible it was forgotten). If you lost your card you could email them to ask [email protected].
- If you are not a member of any club then please email the BKSA, give them your membership number, and ask them to join you to 'North Somerset - Wind, Wheels and Waves'. This will not cost you anything.
- If you are a member of a different club but do also kite at WSM or elsewhere in Somerset sometimes, please email the BKSA and ask them to join you to 'North Somerset - Wind, Wheels and Waves' as an honorary member. This will not cost you anything, it will put you on our membership list, but the BKSA will know the Somerset beaches are not your usual spot.
- If you are a member of a different club and do not intend to enjoy our mud outside the event and only want to be here for the day, then please let us know. We'll ask you for a pic of your BKSA card as proof of insurance, and you pay a lower fee for the day than non-BKSA members.

I'm a BKSA member and am with another BKSA affiliated club
The BKSA can be contacted easily at [email protected].

I'm not a BKSA member but want to be a member of the BKSA/club
Cool! Please go to the BKSA website (link) and join. As you go through, you will be asked to select which club you want to join. Please click 'North Somerset - Wind Wheels and Waves'. The BKSA charges for membership (includes insurance and various other benefits) but adding club membership on is free. It does massively support the club though, the BKSA pays us a small fee, but more importantly it gives us a membership base. We need that as explained in the purple/blue box above. You'll notice that the fee you're paying for your BKSA membership is roughly the same as the amount your saving on the fee you pay us to join us for the day... Not a coincidence. There are other benefits of club membership throughout the year so joiining is well worth it!
